Important Update for Learner Drivers
Proposed Changes to Theory and Practical Test Rules (Not Yet in Force)
There have been discussions and consultations regarding possible changes to the driving test process in Great Britain. It is important to understand that these changes are currently proposals and are NOT yet law.
- Mandatory Waiting Period (Proposed Only)
The government has consulted on introducing a Minimum Learning Period (MLP). This could require learners to wait 3 to 6 months after passing their theory test before taking their practical test. At present, this is only a proposal and has NOT been implemented. - Theory Test Validity (No Change)
Your theory test pass certificate remains valid for 2 years. You must pass your practical test within this time or you will need to retake the theory test. There are currently no changes to this rule. - Long Practical Test Waiting Times
Many learners are experiencing waits of 4–6 months for a practical test. This is due to national backlog and availability of appointments — NOT because of a new rule requiring a 6 month wait. - Booking System Changes (From Spring 2026)
From Spring 2026, learners will only be allowed to change their driving test booking twice (reduced from six times). Only the learner will be able to manage their booking online. These changes are designed to improve the system and reduce misuse.
Please be reassured: There is currently NO law requiring you to wait 6 months after passing your theory test before taking your practical test. If any official changes are confirmed, you will be informed immediately.
