Motorway Studs - Meanings and Locations

BLUE

Location: Between the carriageway and the hard shoulder where there is and emergency telephone.

Meaning: Indicates emergency telephone areas.

RED

Location: On the left edge of the motorway (between the left lane and the hard shoulder).

Meaning: Marks to left-hand edge of the carriageway. Avoid crossing, unless in and emergency.

WHITE

Location: Between lanes in the same direction.

Meaning, Separates lanes on the dual carriageway or motorway

AMBER

Location: Between the right-hand lane and the central reservation.

Meaning: Marks the central reservation, do not cross unless directed by traffic signs or police.

GREEN

Location: At slip road, lay-bys, or between the main carriageway and slip roads.

Meaning Indicates, entry/exit points or access areas.

Tips:
• Always observe road studs when driving at night – they may help you stay in Lane
• Do NOT drive across red or amber studs, unless directed or in an emergency
• Use green studs as guidance when entering or leaving a motorway
