Upcoming Changes to the UK Driving Test Booking System (2026)
If you are a learner driver or driving instructor, there are some important changes coming to the UK driving test booking system in 2026. These changes are designed to reduce misuse of the system, make booking fairer, and give learners more responsibility for managing their own test.
Key dates when the changes come into force
- From 31 March 2026 – Only 2 changes allowed
From this date, a learner can only change an existing practical car driving test booking twice. This includes changing the date, time, test centre, or swapping with another learner. If more changes are needed after that, the learner would need to cancel and book a new test. - From 12 May 2026 – Only learners can manage their own test
From this point onward, driving instructors and other third parties will no longer be allowed to book, change, swap or cancel a practical car driving test on behalf of a pupil. Learners will need to do this themselves using their own booking details. - From 9 June 2026 – Test moves will be restricted to nearby centres
This means learners will no longer be able to move their test freely to any test centre in the country. Instead, they will only be able to move it to the same centre, one of the nearest centres, or back to the centre they originally booked under the rules in force at that time. (If you have a test booked and want to know which test centre you can use or can move a test between ask your driving instructor or contact the DVSA on 0300 200 1122).
Why these changes matter
These changes will affect how instructors and learners plan lessons, book tests, and respond to cancellations. It will become more important to book the right centre first time, only book when genuinely test-ready, and avoid wasting one of the limited changes.
What driving instructors should do now
Driving instructors should begin warning pupils now that they will be responsible for their own bookings. It is also a good idea to encourage pupils not to change or cancel anything without checking availability with you first.
What learners should do
Learners should keep their booking reference safe, use an email address they can access easily, and avoid booking a centre they do not genuinely intend to use.
They should also speak to their instructor before making any changes so they do not waste one of their limited opportunities.
31 March 2026 – Learners can only make 2 changes to a practical car driving test booking.
12 May 2026 – Only the learner can book, change, swap or cancel their own practical car driving test.
9 June 2026 – Learners can only move a test to the same centre or nearby centres under the new location rules.
Final thoughts
The 2026 driving test booking changes are likely to reshape how practical tests are organised in the UK. For genuine learners and instructors, the biggest priority will be better planning, clearer communication, and making sure test bookings are used wisely.
