DRIVING SAFETY HANDOUT

The Importance of Lane Discipline & Observing Before Changing Lanes

What is Lane Discipline?
Lane discipline means:
– Staying centered in your lane
– Using the correct lane for your direction and speed
– Changing lanes only when safe and with proper observation

Why is Lane Discipline Important?
1. Prevents Collisions:
Drifting or swerving into another lane without warning can cause side-swipe accidents.

2. Maintains Traffic Flow:
Staying in your lane keeps traffic predictable and flowing smoothly.

3. Improves Reaction Time:
Predictable driving gives everyone more time to react safely.

4. Legal Requirement:
Failing to observe lane discipline can result in penalties or points on your license.

Dangers of Drifting Between Lanes Without Checking
– Blind Spot Collisions: Vehicles may be in areas you can’t see in mirrors.
– Startling Other Drivers: Unexpected moves can cause panic braking or swerving.
– Motorcyclists and Cyclists: Especially vulnerable to sudden lane changes.
– Close Following Vehicles: High speeds reduce the margin for error.

Safe Lane Change Checklist (Use MSM/PSL Routine)
1. Mirrors – Check all mirrors, especially side mirrors.
2. Signal – Clearly indicate your intention.
3. Manoeuvre – Only move when it is safe and clear.
4. Position, Speed, Look – Adjust speed, check blind spots, and move smoothly.
